As previously noted, I decided to head back home from Yuma Arizona quite spontaneously. Like, on the day of. My decision to travel came immediately after a text from a tenant regarding an appliance issue. It really was a convergence of circumstances outlined on the previous entry got me getting on the road for a little over 16 hrs and 1100 miles in about two days. From Yuma to Tucson to Sonora Texas to Austin. Driving long distances does not faze me. And when I want to get somewhere I just focus on getting there.
Driving long ass distances is meditative and hypnotizing, and gives one plenty of time to contemplate all manner of things which I do not find disagreeable. I was suddenly anxious to get back home, too. To tend to things on the property. To make repairs. Heck, to experience Austin. I was coming back in March, right when SXSW was about to kick off. Previously, like many locals, I couldn't give a damn about SXSW. But now I was actually looking for ward to it.
When I hit border patrol inspection I forget in what state, a smiling agent asked me if there was anyone inside the RV. I said "No" and se waved me through. By the end of the day, I had driven 700 miles from Tucson, through New Mexico and into Texas. Latein the day and into the evening I had driven about an hour on dark highways, which I don't like to do. And I was feeling tired. I had gassed up in the tiny town of Ozona Tx with only a little fuel left. My GPS, which indicates gas stations coming up was showing a blank so I was glad to pull into a station that seemed familiar from a previous road trip. I pushed on, sometimes thinking I should drive all the way home, sometimes thinking, "Why"? When I got to nearby Sonora (which had gas stations!) I saw a sign for a rest stop and at the last moment, pulled in. It was a very nice rest stop! I settled in for the evening and hit the hay shortly thereafter. I had made a good decision to stop. Sonora to Austin is 200 miles and a 3.5 hr. drive. I was tired. It was night. And and I had all of tomorrow to get home.
In the morning, rested and caffeinated, I hit the road and drove the final distance back home arriving mid-morn. Blue skies and sunshine. Hallelujah, I was back home.
